I was born in Globe, at the Gila General Hospital on Monroe Street – about 4 blocks from where I have worked for the past 28 years.
I went to Globe Schools (with a short absence while my dad worked for the State Highway Department in Florence) and graduated from Globe High School in 1969. My parents, who grew up in Claypool and went to Miami schools, have been married for over 60 years.
I worked at the local mines during the summers and over Christmas breaks to earn money for college.
In 1973, Arizona State University awarded me a Bachelor of Arts Degree, With Distinction, in Business Administration. Three years later I was awarded a Juris Doctorate from Arizona State University College of Law-- one of my law school classmates was Terry Goddard, former Attorney General for Arizona.
Carol Erstad, a Globe girl, married me in 1975 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Globe, and we were together for 30 years, until her death in 2005. We had two children: John, who directs television programs for CNN in New York City; and Lindsay, who has a teaching degree but has stayed home to raise my two grandchildren with her husband, a Valley police detective.
Carol and I bought a house in Globe in 1977 and I still live there with my 16 year old dog, Foster.
As you can tell, my family has roots in Gila County that span decades and are deep. This is my home. It should also be apparent that when I commit to something, it is for the long term.
